Our History
Founded in 2006 by Allan Shiel and Chris Hillman, with Peter Banwell joining the board in 2009, LEOT was established to provide scholarships for disadvantaged students in Laos. A major milestone came in 2012 with the opening of the LEOT School in Luang Prabang, marking a transition from financial assistance to direct educational delivery.
Operating in Laos has presented challenges, including gaining official recognition and navigating regulatory processes. Through dedication and strong local partnerships, LEOT has continued to grow into a vibrant learning community led by qualified Lao educators and committed volunteers. All of our teachers are fully qualified Lao nationals, bringing professional expertise, cultural understanding, and deep commitment to their students. Over time, our programmes have expanded to include English, computing, hospitality, and career development.
Community engagement remains central to LEOT’s work. Since 2017, we have supported water access and repair projects and contributed to the construction of 18 schools. Additional initiatives have included a sewing programme supporting disadvantaged women to develop employable skills.
In 2013, our current School Director, Jeannette Tyler, first visited LEOT as a volunteer. Inspired by the students and the school’s mission, she made Luang Prabang her home and has led LEOT since 2014, guiding its continued development and impact.
One of our proudest stories is that of Bounthong, LEOT’s first student, who later became our first teacher. He was also the first member of the LEOT community to marry and is now the proud father of three children. His journey reflects the heart of our mission — empowering students to grow, lead, and give back to their communities.
Today, LEOT continues to expand opportunities through education and community investment, working towards a future where every student has the chance to succeed.
