Our History

LEOT was founded in 2006 by Allan Shiel and Chris Hillman to provide scholarships for disadvantaged students in Laos, with Peter Banwell joining the board in 2009. A major milestone came in 2012 with the opening of the LEOT School, marking a shift from financial support to direct educational delivery.

Operating in Laos has presented challenges, including gaining official recognition and navigating regulatory processes, but LEOT has continued to grow through dedication and collaboration with local partners. Over time, the organisation has developed into a community built around Lao teachers and volunteers, expanding its programmes to include English, computing, hospitality, and career development.

Community engagement has remained central to LEOT’s work, with projects ranging from water support and repairs to the construction of 18 schools since 2017. Additional initiatives have included a sewing programme supporting disadvantaged women in developing employable skills.

Today, LEOT continues to focus on expanding opportunities through education and community investment, working towards a future where every student has the chance to succeed.
